Frequently Asked Questions

How long in advance should I book?

Bookings are taken up to 2 years in advance, with a minimum of 3-6 months recommended for a wedding cake, however we’ll always try our best to accommodate last minute requests.

When can I come for a consultation?

To ensure we have sufficient time to devote to designing your cake, the best time of year to come for your consultation is autumn, winter or spring. Although we try to be as flexible as possible, our preferred days for consultations are Saturdays and Wednesday evenings. However, Saturdays during summer are rare and get booked up quickly due to wedding cake deliveries.

What do I bring to a consultation?

I’m a very visual person, so please bring anything that could be used as inspiration for your cake design. Items such as an invitation, dress, flowers and fabric swatches can all provide inspiration. It is equally important to do your research beforehand and bring your favourite cake pictures, which can all be used as a guide to the style of cake you’re looking for, and provide inspiration for your design.

Can I mix the flavours of my wedding cake?

We recommend each tier of your wedding cake is a different flavour, as the more options you give people, the more likely you will appeal to different taste buds.

Do you have a portion guide to help us?

Our price guide illustrates the different sized cakes available and their portion numbers for both round and square cakes. If you are providing your cake as dessert, please allow double the number of portions.

Can you work within the budget I’ve set for my wedding cake?

If you have a budget in mind, please discuss it with Katie so that we can design the cake accordingly. Our price guide is intended to illustrate how the prices vary with the size of the cake and the different price categories (which are in general determined by the level of work involved in them). Our prices are based on the quality of our work,  and the skill & time involved to produce such intricate work, and for this reason we are unable to accept price matches.

Can you decorate my Mother’s cake?

We understand the sentimental importance of a favorite family recipe, so we’re happy to decorate your own fruit cakes. Please bear in mind however that the cake itself is a relatively small proportion of our prices, as the expertise & time involved is mainly in the decoration. I’ve already booked my wedding cake, but can you provide me with sweet treats? Unfortunately we do not provide sweet treats for dessert tables unless they are also purchased with one of our wedding cakes.

Can you provide dummy tiers and cutting cake?

Adding dummy tiers is a great cost effective way to add tiers and height to your cake, but please bear in mind that the majority of time involved and therefore the price of the cake is in the decoration, so although it’s not as expensive as adding a real tier, there is still a significant cost associated with it. If you then need the same amount of cutting cake to supplement portions, it makes no difference to the price of the cake. Conversely, cutting cake is a really economical way of boosting portion numbers, and can be provided at £1 per portion.

Do you provide cake stands?

We have a range of our favourite silver and pedestal cake stands available to hire, to suit every size & design of cake.  We can even provide sideboards for dessert tables. We ask for a returnable security deposit, which is returned to you after you return the cake stand in it’s original condition to our studio within 5 days of your wedding.

I Love the BRIDES feature of Katie’s wedding, where did you source items?

We made & hand painted our signs, and our teapots & vintage bottles were from our own personal collection, you are welcome to hire them. The suppliers we used are detailed in the Rock My Wedding feature as well as on our “we love” page.

Do you provide/arrange fresh flowers?

Fresh flowers are usually more cost effective than using the same volume of sugar flowers, so recommended for large displays. I prefer to arrange flowers on the cakes myself, and where possible to source the flowers too, as we believe it works out better for all if one person who designs the cake is responsible for it from start to completion. Where you only require a small quantity of flowers it might not be cost effective for you if we source them through our wholesalers (due to minimum pack sizes), so we could then liaise with your florist for them to provide suitable varieties that we can arrange on your cake.

How far do you deliver?

Although our core radius is based around Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire, we have many clients who ask us to deliver further afield and even internationally. Distance is not a restriction for us, however delivery is priced on a per mileage basis. Please email Katie with your venue or a postcode for a quote.

When is the best time to serve my wedding cake?

It’s traditional to serve the wedding cake straight after the meal, but our favorite way to serve the cake is as the sweet option for your evening buffet. Not only does it then allow you to keep the wedding cake on display to save the cutting for the arrival of your evening guests but guests will then find their appetite has returned and it’s the ideal time for a little nibble!

Can we collect our cake?

We advise that we personally deliver and set-up your wedding cake, to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. We cannot be held responsible for cakes once they have left our possession.

What happens after the wedding?

Don’t forget to freeze your cake as soon as possible after the wedding in order to preserve its yummyness, and return any hire items to the design studio within 5 days of your wedding.
